Roma wins best film at Bafta's ?????????

I have seen that film and felt bored throughout, it was a nothing film although shot beautifully it was otherwise very average.
Anyone watched it go to Netflix and tell me I am wrong.
I am happy Malik won for the queen movie .
Feels like an April fools joke to me, Roma was so lame.

Pawlikowski (Cold War) is a top director, liked Ida too, and his breakthrough films with early Paddy Considine and early Emily Blunt when he was based in the UK. He only went back to make films in Polish quite recently.

Surprised Cold War didn't get an award...it was probably released just after the awards season last year and was forgotten about... sometimes it's all about the timing - which is why the best films tend to be released autumn/winter

That’s true, Dogtooth is off-the-scale weird. Didn’t really like Lobster so much, but Killing of a Sacred Deer by the same director was excellent. The Favourite has some great scenes.
Of this year’s films, I thought Cold War was very strong, didn’t pick up anything at BAFTAS, though?

The film to is a nod from the director to post-war Japanese cinema which made a lot of very beautiful looking, comtemplative if at times slightly long-winded films.
Life is in the small details...not in the big gestures - it's up to you to notice them
That is why they gave it the Bafta - just my opinion of course...

Watched the Favourite last night.... thought it as superb... three main characters were brilliant... oh and loved the Duck racing and the dancing ... very good stuff

I'm still trying to get over the fact that Birdman, fucking Birdman, got the Oscar for Best Film four years ago.
These selection panels seem to have two criteria for choosing best films these days; it's either got be artsy fartsy, or
an opportunity for top drawer virtue signalling.
They generally seem to ignore well written, entertaining films with great dialogue.
Anyway, most films these days are utter shite, made for teenagers or kidults.

12 Years A Slave was the last decent film to sweep up.
I never understood the awards hype around Spotlight either, it was mediocre at best.

Perhaps a film has to have a 'wow' factor to win an Oscar and appeal to a broad range of cinema goers. It is difficult though, I've just had a look at the Oscar winners for best film since the 60's and perhaps the later ones are a bit more arty?
The last really fantastic film, for me, that won was Slumdog Millionaire, I nearly got up and clapped at the end of that but didn't want to look a twat!

Unlike sporting competitions where meritocracy usually wins out ( without getting involved in £££££ ) , it’s always puzzled me how you judge one art form, be it a book, painting, film..., over another. When it comes to film awards, what is the criteria precisely. Personally, I loved Roma but I can understand why some would it a struggle to get through. How can you, for example, judge Roma against Vice - so different in most cinematic terms? Anyway, I guess these awards ceremonies keeps the box office turning over

Always take a quick look at the winners of BAFTA's and Oscars just to see what films to avoid watching if I want to have a good time watching it!!!
Oddly enough having always been a Bill Murray fan I watched Lost in Translation the other day. Never really fancied it for some reason, probably because the critics liked it, and sure enough oh dear what on earth was that?!? I'll take Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day or Scrooged any day of the week!!!

Haven't seen Roma and unlikely to so hard to comment but it seems to be like Woody Allen, some critics love his films but the ones I have seen have been dire. I don't think the studios have made much money from him.
